Most modern operating systems export hooks to add information directly to the filesystem view. Under Unix the
proc filesystem is a good example. Under Windows shell extensions can be used. Exporting the browseable directory of a local system or even a network as a standard directory view structure is a simple way to even further incorporate intelligent data sorting into everyday computing.
